Drug Name: COMTAN
Pronounced: COM-tan
Chemical names: Entacapone
COMTAN Drug Use: Comtan is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It is used when the doses of Sinemet begin to start wearing off too soon. Comtan inhibits the enzyme that breaks down Sinemet so that it can work longer without having to take another dose of Sinemet. When used alone Comtan has no effect on Parkinson disease.
COMTAN Drug Usage Instructions: Comtan should be taken at the same time as each dose of Sinemet, up to 8 times a day with or without food.
COMTAN Storage Instructions: Comtan can be stored at room temperature, in a tightly sealed container and out of direct sunlight.
COMTAN Missed Dose: If you miss a dose of this medication take it along with a Sinemet as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never double up on doses.
COMTAN Side Effects: Some of the more common side effects are: back pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, discoloration of urine, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting.
Special Precautions with COMTAN: Less common are agitation, anxiety, infection, dry mouth, stomach distress, worsening of Parkinson’s symptoms. If these or any other effects happen to you contact your physician immediately.
