Drug Name: KEFLEX
Pronounced: KEF-lecks
Chemical names: cephalexin hydrochloride

KEFLEX Drug Use: Keflex is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract. It is in a class of drug call “cephalosporins”. They can also be used for ear infections, bone infections, reproductive and urinary tract infections. Your doctor should find out the type of infection you have before starting this medication so that it’s actually treating the infection you have.

KEFLEX Drug Usage Instructions: Keflex is available as both a tablet and a liquid (for children). Usual dosage is four times a day with food to increase the absorption and decrease stomach upset. Sometimes the doctor may have you double up on the first dose to kick start your medication as sometimes it can take up to 3 days to get the full effect of Keflex.

KEFLEX Storage Instructions: You should store Keflex at room temperature in a sealed bottle away from direct sunlight. The liquid should be thrown out after 14 days because it can start to grow bacteria in the liquid , so just get rid of it after the 14 days.

KEFLEX Missed Dose: If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember unless it’s too close to your next dose, if this is the case skip the last dose and just resume your regular schedule. Do not double up on doses (unless directed by your doctor on your first dose).

KEFLEX Side Effects: The most common side effects are: diarrhea, abdominal pain, agitation, colitis, confusion, headache, vaginal discharge, nausea, rash, seizures, hallucinations, hives, hepatitis, rectal itching, joint inflammation, skin peeling. If you experience any of these or others contact your doctor immediately.

Special Precautions with KEFLEX: If you are allergic to any of the cephalosporins or penicillin you should not take Keflex. If you have colitis you should take precaution before taking Keflex. If you get diarrhea while taking Keflex make sure to talk to your doctor before taking a diarrhea medication as this could make it worse. If your symptoms do not get better in a few days see your doctor. Do not take if pregnant of breastfeeding.
