Drug Name: DIAMOX
Pronounced: DY-AHM-ox
Chemical names: Acetazolamide

DIAMOX Drug Use: Diamox is a a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Diamox is used in the treatment of Glaucoma (both primary and secondary open-angle glaucoma). It is used to decrease the pressure in the eye by up to 40%. It can also be used for severe cases of metabolic acidosis that have not responded to other treatment regimens. Diamox has also been used in the prevention of acute mountain sickness. Diamox can decrease the symptoms like headache, and insomnia by up to 50%.

DIAMOX Drug Usage Instructions: Diamox is best taken with food to decrease stomach upset. Depending on the type of Diamox is being taken the dosage times may vary. If you are taking Diamox sequels they are taken every 12 hours. Avoid alcolhol when taking Diamox.

DIAMOX Storage Instructions: Diamox should be stored at room temperature. Protect from direct sunlight and heat. Keep out of places that have high moisture content. Do not crush tablets as it will affect absorption rate, especially with the long acting Diamox Sequels. Do not take after 6 in the evening as it may affect sleep parameters.

DIAMOX Missed Dose: If you miss a dose of Diamox take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose skip the previous dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

DIAMOX Side Effects: The most common side effects of Diamox include loss of appetite, drowsiness, weight loss, confusion, malaise. Also Diamox can cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun and it may be easier to get a sunburn so it’s a good idea to wear extra sunscreen or spend less time in the sun while on Diamox.

Special Precautions with DIAMOX: Diamox should not be taken long term for glaucoma therapy because it may hide worsening of the symptoms. Be careful with sun exposure while on Diamox. Wear sunscreen and limit sun exposure. Diamox is teratogenic in animals so should not be given to pregnant or breastfeeding.
